Dark blue tartan scarf

A dark blue scarf in lambswool, woven as a tartan. Tartan is the familiar pattern of intersecting stripes in different colours, woven into the cloth rather than printed onto it.

The scarf measures 180 x 25 cm — a classic narrow scarf: long enough to loop once and still hang, narrow enough to tuck down inside a coat.

It is woven in twill, the binding in which the groups of threads shift with every weft so the weave runs on the diagonal; it is the same family of weaves that produces herringbone and diamond patterns, as shown in our weaving guide. The scarf is made in Scotland, where this pattern carries a symbolic and cultural weight it has nowhere else.
