Grey blue tartan scarf

A tartan scarf woven in Scotland from lambswool, in grey blue. It measures 190 x 35 cm – long and narrow, so it knots easily at the throat and lies flat under a coat collar.

Tartan is the familiar pattern of intersecting stripes in different colours. Scotland is not where the pattern began, but it is where it came to carry real symbolic and cultural weight, and the names linking setts to clans only arrived in the 19th century. The cloth is woven in twill, where the binding shifts by a thread with each pass of the weft so a diagonal runs through the weave. Care: Airing the scarf outdoors is usually enough between wears. When it needs washing, use a detergent intended for wool, by hand in lukewarm water or on the machine's wool programme at 30 degrees, and do not rub the cloth – wool felts.
