A tartan scarf in pure lambswool, grey with blue and white checkers. Lambswool comes from a sheep's first shearing, which makes it finer and softer than wool from later fleeces while keeping the springiness and the warmth that wool is bought for in the first place.

Tartan is the pattern of intersecting stripes that Scotland made its own — the earliest Scottish examples date back to the 4th century, and the idea of tying particular patterns to particular clans is a 19th-century invention rather than an ancient tradition. This scarf is woven in Scotland, in the country the pattern belongs to.

Care: Air the scarf outdoors overnight when it needs freshening rather than washing. When it does need a wash, use a detergent intended for wool, by hand in lukewarm water or on the machine's wool programme at 30 degrees, and avoid rubbing the fabric so the wool cannot felt. Never tumble dry — dry it flat on a dry towel — and remove any pills with a cashmere comb. The details are on our washing and care page.
