Large checkered shawl in black and gray

A checked shawl is one of the few patterns that reads as both formal and casual depending entirely on what it is worn over. This one is woven from 100% cashmere at 15 µm in large checks, in black and grey.

It is woven in a basket weave — a variation on plain weave in which groups of yarns pass over and under together rather than singly, which gives the cloth a softer, more pliable drape than a tight plain weave. At 90 x 200 cm it is shawl width rather than scarf width: wide enough to wear open over the shoulders like a stole, and still long enough to fold in half and loop as a scarf.

Care: Air it outdoors overnight rather than washing it whenever you can. When it needs a wash, use a detergent intended for wool and cashmere, by hand in lukewarm water or on the machine's wool programme at 30 degrees, and avoid rubbing the cloth.
