Large checkered pashmina shawl in red, blue, beige and grey

A large checked shawl woven from half cashmere and half wool, in red, beige, grey and blue. The blend is a deliberate one: the cashmere brings the softness and the warmth-to-weight, the wool gives the cloth the body it needs to hang properly over a shoulder rather than collapsing.

It is woven in twill and measures 70 x 200 cm, with the whole shawl weighing just 142 g — wide enough to wear as a wrap across the shoulders, long enough to fold lengthways and wind as a scarf. The check runs through all four colours, which makes it easy to key an outfit to whichever one you are already wearing. See the rest of our checkers and stripes.

Care: Both fibres here are wool, so treat it as wool: air it rather than washing it when it is not actually dirty, and when it is, use a wool detergent and hand wash in lukewarm water or use your machine's wool programme at 30°C. Don't rub the cloth — that is what causes felting. Dry it flat on a towel, never tumble dry, and steam or press it on the wool setting if it needs smoothing.
