Burgundy scarf with beige dots

A burgundy scarf with beige dots, woven in India from pure wool. At 180 x 70 cm it is broad as well as long – wide enough to fold over the shoulders as a shawl, or to wrap several times at the neck when the weather asks for it.

The cloth is woven in basket weave, also called plain weave: the weft goes over one warp thread and under the next, then reverses, so the threads lock in a simple criss-cross. Care: Airing the scarf outdoors overnight is usually enough. When it needs a wash, use a detergent made for wool, by hand in lukewarm water or on the wool programme at 30 degrees, and avoid rubbing the cloth so the wool does not felt.
