Dark blue knitted cashmere hat

A hat knitted in pure cashmere, for the mornings when a coat on its own is not enough. Cashmere is warm out of proportion to its weight, and it shows most across the forehead, where coarser wool is likeliest to prickle: the fibre here measures 15 µm, the fine end of the 15 to 19 µm range that qualifies as cashmere.

The cashmere comes from Inner Mongolia, where the goats' soft undercoat is combed out by hand during the spring moult rather than shorn.

Care: Airing it outdoors is usually enough. When it needs washing, use a detergent intended for wool and cashmere, by hand in lukewarm water or on the machine's wool programme at 30 degrees, and avoid rubbing it. Never tumble dry — dry it flat on a towel instead of hanging it up wet. Knitwear can pill where it rubs against a collar or a scarf; the small balls lift off with your fingers or a cashmere comb.
