Large violet tartan scarf

Tartan is the pattern of intersecting stripes in different colours, and here it is woven in violet in pure lambswool. Lambswool comes from the sheep's first shearing — the finest wool the animal gives — so the scarf stays soft where it touches the skin.

At 190 x 50 cm this is a large scarf. Knot it or loop it and it still covers the chest; leave it open and it falls the length of a jacket. It is made in Scotland, where tartan belongs, and violet keeps it out of the usual winter greys and navies.

Care: Wash by hand in lukewarm water, or on the machine's wool programme at 30 degrees with a wool and cashmere detergent. Avoid rubbing the wool, dry the scarf flat rather than hanging it wet, and keep it out of the tumble dryer. The care page has the rest.
