Blue tartan scarf in cotton

Blue tartan, woven in 86% cotton with 7% modal and 7% linen. Cotton is the fibre doing most of the work here — breathable and comfortable straight against the skin — while the linen gives the cloth body and the modal softens the handle.

At 180 x 70 cm this is a scarf rather than a stole: long enough to loop twice at the neck, narrow enough to sit neatly inside a coat collar without bulk. Woven in India.

Tartan — the familiar pattern of intersecting stripes in different colours — has a longer history than the clan associations suggest. The earliest Scottish examples date to the 4th century, and cloth woven in the same crossing-stripe pattern existed 3000 years before our era; it was only in the 19th century that the patterns were given names and tied to particular clans. • Composition: 86% cotton / 7% modal / 7% linen
  • Colour: blue
  • Size: 180 x 70 cm
  • Country of origin: India

Care: A gentle, cool wash with a mild detergent is all this needs. Skip the tumble dryer so the cloth keeps its measurements, and dry it flat or on a line. If it creases — cotton and linen will — iron it warm while it is still a little damp.
