Tartan cotton scarf in beige and blue

Tartan in blue and beige, woven in 86% cotton with 7% modal and 7% linen. The cotton makes up the bulk of it and keeps the cloth breathable; the linen adds a bit of crispness and the modal a bit of softness. The result is a scarf that carries from a cool summer evening through to autumn rather than belonging to one season.

Tartan is the pattern of intersecting stripes in different colours that Scotland made its own. The earliest Scottish examples date back to the 4th century, and textiles woven in the same crossing-stripe pattern go back some 3000 years before our era — though nowhere else did the pattern take on the symbolic weight it has in Scotland. There is more of it in our tartan scarves.

At 180 x 70 cm it loops twice with ends to spare, or hangs open down the front of a jacket. Woven in India.

  • Composition: 86% cotton / 7% modal / 7% linen
  • Colour: blue/beige
  • Size: 180 x 70 cm
  • Country of origin: India

Care: Wash it gently in cool water with a mild detergent, and keep it out of the tumble dryer so the cloth holds its size. Dry it flat or on a line rather than bunched over a radiator. Cotton and linen both crease, so press it with a warm iron while it is still slightly damp and the creases come straight out.
