An ikat scarf in a blend of 65% cashmere and 35% wool, handwoven in our own weaving mill in Nepal. The cashmere is spun from 15 µm fibre; the wool gives the cloth a little more body than pure cashmere has on its own.
Ikat is a dyeing technique rather than a printing one. The yarn is tied at specific places with a resistant material — wax, string or tape — so the dye cannot reach those sections, and only then is it woven. The result is a handmade fabric with the characteristic slightly blurred look that comes from small variations in how the dye takes. This one is in grey and brown.
At 70 x 200 cm it can be worn as a scarf or opened out as a wrap.
See more cashmere scarves, or read the full account of the technique in ikat weaving.
Care: Cashmere and wool both prefer airing to washing, so hang the scarf outdoors overnight when you can. When it needs more, use a detergent intended for wool and cashmere — by hand in lukewarm water or on the wool programme at 30 degrees, without rubbing the fabric. Dry it flat on a towel and keep it out of the tumble dryer. See washing and care instructions.
