Ikat is dyed before it is woven. The yarn is bound at intervals with string or tape so the dye cannot reach those points, then dyed, then set up on the loom — the pattern is already in the thread before the first pass of the shuttle. Because the binding is done by hand, an ikat pattern has soft edges rather than sharp ones.
This one is black and grey, woven in 65% cashmere and 35% wool with a fibre diameter of 15 µm — a blend that keeps cashmere against the neck with wool in the mix. It measures 70 x 200 cm and is woven at our own weaving mill in Nepal.
There is more on the technique in our post on ikat weaving, and more patterned pieces under checkers and stripes.
Care: Air the scarf outdoors overnight rather than washing it unnecessarily. When it needs washing, use a detergent intended for wool and cashmere, by hand in lukewarm water or on the machine's wool programme at 30 degrees; avoid rubbing it, as the wool can felt. Never tumble dry, never wring, and dry it flat on a towel. A cashmere comb takes off any pills. See our washing and care page.
