Grey tartan scarf

A tartan scarf in pure lambswool, in grey. Tartan is the well known pattern of stripes intersecting in different colours; the earliest Scottish examples date back to the 4th century, and nowhere else does the pattern carry the same symbolic and cultural weight.

The scarf is woven in twill — a diagonal weave rather than a straight over-under, which you can read more about on our weaving page. It measures 190 x 35 cm, long enough to loop twice and still hang at the front.

Care: Air the scarf outdoors overnight rather than washing it unnecessarily. When it needs washing, use a detergent made for wool and cashmere, by hand in lukewarm water or on the wool programme at 30 degrees, then dry it flat on a towel — never in the tumble dryer. Any pilling where the scarf rubs against a coat can be lifted off with a cashmere comb. Full instructions: washing and care.
