We see more and more men dropping the tie altogether, as it can make an outfit more formal than the situation calls for. But that is really a shame, as the tie is a fine way to add colour to an outfit. So what is the alternative?
A bow tie has the same problem as the tie. It becomes very formal and buttoned-up. It suits many situations well, but in everyday life it can easily become too much.
The ascot, or cravat, is really a cross between a scarf and a tie. It is typically worn under an open shirt. They are typically made of silk with a paisley print or similar. You do not see many men wearing an ascot today.
The scarf, like the tie, can be varied endlessly, and they come in lots of different sizes, thicknesses and qualities.
Scarves for men are not so widespread in the Nordic countries. Most people associate the scarf with the thick neck scarf used for autumn and winter, but scarves are much more than that. Our ultra-light cashmere scarves are perfect to sling around the neck, and go well with a shirt and suit.
The good thing about the scarf is that, unlike the tie, bow tie and ascot, it can be taken off if, for example, it gets too warm.
